Making a difference? To what? To the world? If we think in terms of making a difference to or in the world it might seem so daunting a task, almost meaningless, that we just brush the concept aside and carry on with our ordinary lives. But wait, there is a way. Always. And it is simple. And yes it can be very easy.
So, what is this way? Well, just consider yourself for a moment. When someone has paid you a compliment or just even smiled at you across from the nearby restaurant table; did you not feel something good, even just a warm, comfortable feeling. And maybe not even consciously thinking it but, yes that was a nice feeling.
A small matter, maybe. But imagine if we experienced a number of these sensations during the course of a day. It is unlikely that at the end of the day we would have lingering feelings of discontent or unhappiness.
Let us put the shoe on the other foot now: Imagine yourself going out of your way to be the person paying the compliment, the one smiling. In fact you don’t have to go out of your way at all, it is all in the course of daily living.
It can be immensely rewarding in many ways to consciously decide to be the initiator of small incidents of happiness, light moments, just a pleasant thank you or yes please, or well done; any good natured, friendly, smiling uplifting remark can make all the difference to a person’s state of being. It can indeed promote improved health in its various aspects — to the giver and the receiver.
The accumulation of all of these small moments, both given and received, can enhance our lives quite dramatically. Simple and easy yes, but we need to do it. If you do not approach life this way already, try it. Have fun doing it. You may be very pleasantly surprised at the extent of the benefits — to you and to others.
